Entry requirements

Entry to our research programmes usually requires a Honours degree with a first or 2.1 classification, or the equivalent if you have been educated outside the UK.

Course start dates are either September or January but applications can be considered for any month.

Media, Communications and Culture is an emerging theme, drawing together staff from across the Research Institute, from the disciplines of English and Music. In September 2007 the Institute introduced a new route to its very successful MRes Humanities Programme on Media, Communications and Culture.

FACILITIES

Research students are supported through the provision of: shared office space, IT equipment and research funding to support some travel and other expenses.

Our facilities include The University Library, which has access in paper and electronic form to a wide range of resources necessary in pursuing research in Media, Communications and Culture at postgraduate level. In addition, the Media Building has its own digital editing suite, exhibition and visual arts work space, and a technician to assist students with their audio-visual projects. We also provide access to industry-standard software for producing video editing, film production, photography and music production.

RESEARCH STAFF AND STUDENTS

Currently eighteen members of staff contribute to the MCC undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. These come from a range of media and culture disciplines including English, Sociology, Geography, Modern Languages, Music, Film Studies, and Visual Arts. The research interests covered by these staff ranges from globalisation to subcultures, from postmodernism to British cinema, and from the visual representation of marginalised groups to ecology and animal rights. We have a number of postgraduate students currently working towards MRes, Masters and PhD in Media and Cultural Studies, which forms a vibrant postgraduate community. We also hold a Guest Speaker series that invites active researchers and practitioners in Media and Culture and which is open to all students and staff.
